 Orygen Youth Health

Orygen Youth Health (OYH), led by 2010 Australian of the Year, Professor Patrick McGorry AO, is a world-leading youth mental health organisation, based in Parkville, Melbourne and is comprised of:

·         An internationally renowned research centre—Orygen Youth Health Research Centre (OYHRC)

·         A clinical service for young people aged 15 to 24 years with emerging serious mental health and substance use issues residing in the north and west of Melbourne—Orygen Youth Health Clinical Program (OYHCP) and

·         A training and communication program which endeavours to share knowledge gained through clinical and research expertise to enhance the service system that supports young people with mental health and substance use issues—Orygen Youth Health Training and Communications (OYHTC)

OYH has taken a national and international leadership role in youth mental health. The integration of the research centre and clinical service is an internationally unique clinical-research partnership which has led to the development of evidence-based approaches in addressing youth mental health issues. This integrated “Orygen” model has been replicated around the world in countries such as the United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Austria, Hong Kong and Singapore.

OYH is dynamic and entrepreneurial in nature and comprised of a energetic and passionate team committed to the work they do and more importantly, the impact their work has in the real world and on the lives of young Australians and their families.

Areas of research include:

First Episode Psychosis, Bipolar Disorders, Mental Health Literacy and Mental Health First Aid, ‘At Risk’ Studies, Suicide Research, Mood and Anxiety Disorders, Personality Disorders, Neuropsychology, Neuroimaging and Psychosocial/Functional recovery.

Orygen Youth Health aims to lead the reform of the mental health service system and as such, works collaboratively with state and federal governments on creating a more effective and efficient system.  One of the key organisational goals in doing this is to create better-outcomes for young Australians suffering from a mental illness.

Professor McGorry dedicated 2010 and his Australian of the Year Award to ensuring the voices of young people with mental ill health are heard and action is taken to offer them the greatest hope for recovery.
